Lemme guess... The backfire messages are buggy, and all this experimentation and knowledge through painful gain, and this 'trial by fire' was all for naught?
The oversight was simple... holy man combines elemental mana... boom, effect1 happens.
Elemental man combines holy mana, boom, effect1 happens.
Magician blows mana disrupt, boom, effect1 happens.
Ranger plays with fire shard, effect2 happens.
This is all that i've seen with my own eyes... I wish I could have an empath playing with shadows, to have either effect3, or another copy of effect2 happen, but there's the science, right there.

Since Arcane Magic needs risks, but I don't feel the risks of 'spell fails, arm falls off' is fair, I'm going to reccomend various effects that can be the results of mana influxes.
EMA:
Normal cast:
You gesture at a black-backed jackal.
A myriad of brilliant purple lights coalesce from your fingertips and dart toward your target with a feverish speed!
The lights begin to drip like liquid, then solidify into tight bands of crackling energy around the black-backed jackal!
The bands snap around it, leaving it bound!
The black-backed jackal falls to the ground!
Roundtime: 2 seconds
When the magic-user casts EMA and an influx begins, the beams of light never solidify.
1) The light turns into liquid, still dense but not able to bind the target.
You gesture at a black-backed jackal.
A myriad of brilliant purple lights coalesce from your fingertips and dart toward your target with a feverish speed!
An influx of mana causes something to go terribly wrong!
The lights begin to drip like liquid, but never fully solidify!
The liquid light crashes violently into the black-backed jackal, slamming him away from melee!
A black-backed jackal is stunned!

When the magic-user casts EMA and an influx begins, the beams of light created might also not fully disconnect from the mage's fingertips. When this happens, three things can be a result.
1) The caster quickly draws back his hands, causing the the strips of light to whip the target instead of bind.

An influx of mana causes something to go terribly wrong!
The lights begin to prematurely stiffen, then turn into thin strips of crackling energy, lashing at the black-backed jackal!
The strips land a light hit to a black-backed jackal's right hand!
The strips land a good hit to a black-backed jackal's neck!
The strips land a glancing hit to a black-backed jackal's back!
The black-backed jackal is stunned!

2) The caster's fingertips, still connected to the strips, are also connected to the bands that contain the target. Neither are able to move further away or closer to each other. The caster also cannot stow or get items, as if he is grappled to the target.
