Tons of options!
You could make Guns range the gamut from 2 sec RT to 20 sec RT and I still think there is plenty of ways to make them unique.
Ammo damage type is an easy unique ability. (e.g. 100% pierce)
Then comes all the really fun stuff...
Knockdown
Shooting from rooms away
Knock back into rooms
Proc effects
Multi shot bullets
AOE bullets
Armor penetration
Higher armor damage, higher shield damage
Magic barrier penetration
CALLED SHOT (AIM BODY LOC) (I know kodius wanted to add this in.)
New AIM mechanics (force kneel?)
Debilitation effects
-Bullets only work once
--- This could offset a lot of DPS issues if people lose bullets
--- For example, 1 steel ingot makes 5 bullets. No big deal right? Well if you want UBER TYRIUM BULLETS OF DOOM. You can make them, but you lose em.

Just a quick idea, as everything is being reworked this might be a possibility. How about introducing special ammo for repeaters only (smaller bolts)? Something that would put them ahead of regular crossbows but not too far ahead. If i'm not mistaken that is around 35% difference compared to regular crossbows and bows as well then. Might be a little bit over the top as it is right now.

I think it would be better to balance any new repeater template within the template itself, fundamentals and all this.

I have the heavy repeating crossbow constructed from sun-bleached mammoth bones from when I ran around the Ghost Ship. This repeater only holds four bolts. How would the changes affect this crossbow?

I wasn't planning on doing anything to affect old crossbows or old repeating crossbows. They'd still hit hard, and do what they do now. New crossbows will simply allow more variation of load times and damage multipliers.

So my dwarven arbalest will still take 2 years, 5 months, 4 days, 7 hours, and 31 minutes to load (~20 seconds)? And my forester's crossbow will still take 5 seconds? I want the one to lower and the other to stay the same. Guess I'll just have to live with it either way.

Forester's Crossbows have a base load time of 9, so after stat bonuses you should only be getting 6 from a container?
New arbalests will be released to replace the dwarven one. And/or we'll update the shop selling them at some point to use the new templates.

The original forester's from 1997 were 6/7 load time, not 8/9.

And maybe 2 exist in the game now, and I bet less than a hundred of the 7/8 foresters are still around in circulation. The 8/9 has been the standard for over a decade and thousands of them exist in the game. What's your point?

I've always wondered why reduced loading from a quiver wasn't a skill/stat thing and why its guild based. Some of the "guild based" stuff in this game seems silly to me. Especially with as progressive as the classes development have become.

I know I'm over a month from this, but to me. I agree with Raesh on this...
Crossbows/bows were far superior to early firearms from reliability problems... to inaccuracies and lack of precision. The real effectiveness wasn't anything to do with damage either, shock and awe was it. Some type of stunning affect, panic or something perhaps.
Not able to be able to be magically defended from, just panic is panic, those with the constitution to stand will stand, others won't.

production time, effectiveness in battle, training time all contributed to the rise of the firearm. it would take years to train someone to fight hand to hand in armor, the same amount of time to train someone to use a bow, which both required alot of skilled trademan and raw materials to outfit properly, who then could be killed by a crossbowman who did not require as much training, but still a fair amount of equipment, who eventually could be killed by some dude who was given a metal tube and stick with some saltpeter and a lead ball and practiced for a month.
the rise of the canon changed the way fortifications were constructed, castles gave way to earthern forts, heavy infantry gave way to pikeman and crossbowmen, then pikeman, aquibusiers and field artillery, then just gunners and artillery.
the one constant since the adoption of the stirrup in european warfare is cavalry. from the byzantine empire, the steppes folks and huns to the french heavy cav all the way to ww2 (the french still fielded cavalry regiments, and still do, they're just in tanks now)
the cheapest and most effective technology always dictated the direction warfare would go.
about the time the vikings, then the normans, were stompin round england, folks in china started using hand cannons. at the same time as that, venetian and genoan merchants were hustling over land thru turkey,syria and where the suez canal is today, buildin ships on the other side, and sailing over to china to trade, and they braught back the guns (and also the plague from the southeastern coast of the black sea, where the amazons supposedly lived) and pepper. yum!

I suspect this will be the equivalent of the adjustable draw strength stat that crafted bows already have planned. I.e. you'll have templates with high draw strength/tension, templates with low draw strength/tension, and some with an adjustable draw strength/tension.
In other news, I hate typing the word strength. The last three consonants come out in a different order every time. Grr.

Just to clarify, there are actually no adjustable bows at this point, but the ability is there and I was told at release that it would be reserved for Auction/Quest quality bows and templates.
As for the OP's question, I'm pretty sure that once Tinkering is released that crossbows will be very similar to new bows in how they function.
