What are the down sides to this weapon? I got one for back training but I like the affect enough that I might bring these weapons up to speed with my other secondaries. Is the maul a practical weapon for either class?

Not when you compare them to forged weapons. A forged claymore and a forged war mattock will do you much better.

i suspected that was the case. I researched a little more after I asked the question and decided that for the time being the maul is a good choice as it puts me at the edge of an unburdened state. perhaps someday that won't be an issue but I think I'll keep working the maul for my back training.
