Been researching this, but are there any mobs that drop boxes beyond bawdy swain level (level in boxes, not combats necessarily)? The only thing I can see is death spirits and skeletal pirates up beyond the north gate, but I doubt I'll ever find a cleric on Ratha to bless my weapon, so those aren't an option.
If as I suspect there aren't any, I'll have to head to snow goblins on Aesry I guess, but I was just hoping maybe I missed something in the bestiary.

Have you tried Kra'hei hatchlings? Looks like they also have a relatively high box drop rate.

Are they any higher? I tried them but didn't pay enough attention to the mindstates. I will go check it out now.
A tangentially related question: according to Epedia, you can modify the exp gain by artificially increasing the difficulty of the box, like by wearing hand armor or standing. Is this true? Does this apply to buffs as well, i.e. if I don't use buffs I will get more exp? Might be able to combo that strategy with hatchling boxes to extend my stay here.

I don't believe this is true anymore, similar to how you can't actively penalize yourself skinning. Along that same mindset, I don't think buffs don't penalize learning anymore. Everything should learn based on your base ranks now.
Uzmam! The Chairman will NOT be pleased to know you're trying to build outside of approved zones. I'd hate for you to be charged the taxes needed to have this place re-zoned. Head for the manor if you're feeling creative.

OK, thanks. Hopefully disarm blind on hatchling boxes can take to the adult Kra'hei (seems like they might). Appreciate the input everyone.

Just a heads up that adult kra'hei are fairly profile casters of TM and tend to destroy anyone who doesn't have a TM barrier of some kind. E.g. warrior mages or bards.
This is from fairly old experience, so it may or may not be the same now.

You forgot Veil of Ice and Pathway Defense.

Thanks. I also forgot general defense barriers like MAF and grounding field. I think only traders lack the tools to adequately defend against TM spells, and they at least have both shield and evasion secondary.

Those two guilds are the only ones that typically hunted adult kra.

Yeah I was reading that on the Wiki, seems like their magic is pretty boss.
I only have a physical barrier as far as I can tell so they might be impossible for me. But I noticed that the skeletal sailors up with the death spirits are corporeal undead, does that mean I don't need a blessed weapon? Might be an exercise in futility but I could check their boxes and see how they fare.
I slaughtered a bunch of hatchlings last night and their boxes do teach a bit better than swain, so I'll be OK for another couple dozen ranks perhaps.

Just noticed you said DISARM BLIND so wanted to comment. The majority of my lockpicking EXP does not come from disarming, it comes from harvesting the trap parts and then PICK BLIND or QUICK without analyzing the lock.

A blessed weapon will give you harder strikes against the undead but isn't required for corporeal undead like skeletons. If you have a blunt weapon at level, that'll work better than a blade against skeletons.
You will need a bless for death spirits.
Do you use harvest when popping boxes? That should also extend how far you can stretch them.

Yeah I disarm blind and harvest, then pick with identifying. It's the only way I can get it moving on these boxes available.
I tried out skeletal sailors, forgot to put armor on (lol) and realized they give infections if they hit you, but I can work around that. Got a couple boxes from them but wanna get a few more before I test it, my guess is that they should be somewhat harder than hatchling but we will see.

They (the spectral pirates specifically) also have a highly annoying ability that teleports you into the jail cell near their sunken ship. It used to require lockpicking skill to get out, but at least that has changed. It's still a bit of a pain since if you're hunting in the mist area it can be rather a maze to get back to your spot.

I got lost in that misty beach for a good while last week...it can be annoying. They spawn on the road before that place though, too.
It seems the skeletons also web you. But:
>You notice two silver studs right below the keyhole which look dangerously out of place there.
>You think this trap is precisely at your skill level.
>Roundtime: 4 sec.
It might be worth it, these teach a whole lot better than hatchling boxes.
I'm hidden the majority of time when hunting them, so hopefully that special ability won't be too much of a problem.
