Yeah, right, and the players who are there just to harass traders are going to even notice that guard?
The ultimate problem is that there's no way for anyone to stop someone from constantly stealing. One character can stand on the ferry with
loop:
search
point %0
put steal %0
waitfor roundtime
goto loop
and just do that for the whole length of the trip. This is seriously annoying. Yes, they have every right to do it. Yes, they are within policy. Yes, they are 'roll playing good'. Whatever. When my only recourse to get away from such irritation is to log, well, then I'm not a happy player.
Give us some way to retaliate on the ferry, even if we're not big enough to thump/report/kill our harasser. You'd think, in an enclosed area, if you have enough people, you should be able to at least shove the nuisance into the river. What would be a lot of fun, at least for the harassed, is if someone is too much of a jerk, they're barred from the ferry for a while. But that would just make everything DisneyRealms (tm) to let people get some kind of revenge for being harassed, even if they weren't big enough to report the idiot harassing them.

Ah, here's the problem ... these thieves don't care about being caught. It means nothing to them. Actually, many of them have more fun because then the victim knows they're being stolen from and are helpless to do anything about it.
You see the fun of the whole game is to make someone feel frustrated and helpless to do anything about the situation. It isn't about coin; it's about making a player upset and irritated.
It's the feelings of frustration, helplessness, irritation, anger, hopelessness ... this is the fun the thieves get out of the situation. And if they're so far over the victim the victim can't retaliate at all, even by reporting, well, even better. That is why they do it, afterall.
What we're asking for is a way for even totally outclassed victims to retaliate, either in concert with others or by being able to get the guards to do something about it. Yeah, it makes DR even more DisneyRealms. Oh well, that's why it won't ever be put into place, but it would be fun to think about.

Like Hobb said there are ample ways of protecting yourself as it is...both automatic/coded systems as well as RP options. Traders make money. Spend some of it on your protection. That's called RP. If you arent willing to do that, than you don't really have anything to complain about except that nothing in life is free.
<<You see the fun of the whole game is to make someone feel frustrated and helpless to do anything about the situation. It isn't about coin; it's about making a player upset and irritated.>>
I'm responding to this because i thnk most people think this is true. Turns out, the vast majority of thieves are interested in RPing they character as stealthy thieves. Thus, you never see most thieves. So that can't be true. This is a complaint of mines. There like 100 ways to play a thief. Would be a livlier place if they tried diffrent things.
If they tried different things, and thusly came MORE out of the shadows, your arguement would be even less valid because they would be coming out for RP purposes.
Its hard to RP with a thief, I agree. But thieves add texture to your experience, like it or not. Also noone is responsible for how you react anything in life. You are.

Well, as the player of Jorunn and an unwilling participant in the above ferry situation, I can say that Blixxer succeeded. My character wasn't about to retaliate, because a) that's what he wanted and b) she would have gotten creamed. He had stolen from me prior to getting on the ferry, and I admit that at 2am mountain time I wasn't paying as close attention to my coins as I normally do so I wasn't all that upset. I caught him again on my way to the ferry with only a few copper, tried to say something to him, got nothing, and accused.
I could have handled this situation if he had spoken, said something, acted something, anything. I might even have understood it better if one of us had been sleepwalking - theft is the price you pay if you aren't looking at the screen, in my opinion. One thief waiting outside the guild recently at another late hour said, "I could report them, but it's more fun to steal from them."
As it was it left me, player of, furious and Jorunn, the character (who had been juggling just prior to this incident) frustrated. Twasn't the amount of coin he took - he actually was unable to steal from me on the ferry itself - but come on now.

>Spend some of it on your protection.
But there is no way to protect oneself from these thieves. The only possible recourse is to be big enough or be able to afford to hire someone big enough to report them. If you're only 30th circle, there is nothing you can do unless they're really a novice, in which case the GM is likely to warn you for wasting their time.
>i thnk most people think this is true.
We know it's true because these are the people we're complaining about! If we didn't have to deal with these idiots in the name of fun, we wouldn't be complaining.
>Thus, you never see most thieves.
No, I don't care about these thieves. I also don't care about the ones who quit when caught or otherwise give it up after a few tries. They're part of the price of doing business. The ones I hate are the ones who are too big to report, repeatedly steal after getting caught, camp out on graves after killing someone, follow someone around stealing from them without pause, chasing them all over the realms, gwething about their incompetance and generally acting like irriating, harassing nuisances. Some places you can do something about them, like reporting them to the trader guild for thugging. Cool. You can't do anything about them on the ferry though. Yes, it's for their fun so they have some place to safely harass people, but it isn't fun for anyone else involved because there is nothing they can do. NOTHING.
>Also noone is responsible for how you react anything in life. You are.
Yup, you can always log until you get to the other side on the ferry. Oh boy. What a thrill. Either that or put up with their harassment. What a wonderful pair of options.

there's an old saying...
it takes a thief to catch a thief.
or, in the case of dr, to stop a thief.
if i were to say, guard someone, there's maybe 10 or 12 people that could get by me. in all of dr. i'm sure you could hire someone to guard yer pockets, or, you did say you have a thief - i presume on another account because you say you use your trader to train him/her. so.... get training.
and remember, at the end of the day....
as a player, you have to remember that all the platinums in the world are only pretend money.

That's why I don't really care about the money. Eh. It's the annoyance factor and the won't leave me alone part that's the problem. I don't care about the handful of miscellaneous coin even a thief like you could get. No biggie.
Maybe it's because I also have a real hard time in real life with people who follow me around, yell at me, wave threatening signs at me and otherwise crowd me. I don't like being even singled out and stared at. Maybe its because I'm a cripple, but it is very uncomfortable to be treated like that, even in a game.

There's an RP solution right there...and a way of pulling other thieves from monotonous scripting willingly. Thieves need something to do in their downtime. Schvartz is like the head of the guild....figure something out where she brokers protection services.

It's pretty easy to talk about having someone guard you when you have a 90th circle Thief on your second or third account. It is unrealistic, however, to expect someone actually playing the game to simply follow a trader around. It's too boring. Also, young traders couldn't really afford to pay someone for that anyway.
The issue is that because of guild requirements and learning rates, thieves will always outclass traders in combat. Without any significant recourse, traders become entertainment for thieves. Great fun for the thieves! Not so much for the traders...
Not that its an issue for me. My trader in The Fallen has never been stolen from. Not once. (The script keeps track.)

Ok as a former Paladin I am used to being stolen from so being a trader is no big thing for me. And I have to say Ragran is fun to be stolen from. I sometime think he does it because he thinks we are asleep but I normally always at least say hi to him when I see him. Not much I can do on a ferry when I get stolen from. But I have been party to those that consistantly point and steal even after you catch them they continue to do it. It gets annoying. I give credit to Ragran for at least RPing it unlike most thieves out there today.
